How to check AI-generated homework before relying on it

The goal is not to catch a tool out. It is to help your child decide whether an answer is accurate, useful, and genuinely theirs to use.

The short version

Check the question, check the working, check the evidence, and then ask your child to explain the result without looking.

01

Check that it answered the actual question

Start with the task sheet, not the AI response. Does the answer address every part of the question? Does it use the requested format, method, word count, or source type? A polished answer can still miss the assignment.

Ask your child to highlight the command words, such as compare, explain, calculate, or justify. Then check whether the response has done those jobs.

02

Check the reasoning as well as the final answer

For maths and science, trace each step. A correct-looking final number does not prove that the method is right. For written work, ask whether the examples and claims actually support the main point.

If one step cannot be explained, pause there. That is a better place for a hint or a teacher question than for another generated answer.

  • Redo one calculation independently.
  • Look up a factual claim in a reliable source.
  • Ask where an example or quotation came from.
  • Remove anything your child cannot explain in their own words.

03

Make the final version the child’s work

A child can use feedback to improve a draft, but they should decide the final wording and understand what it says. Ask them to close the tool and explain the answer aloud before submitting anything.

If the task belongs to a school, follow its rules on using AI. When in doubt, encourage your child to tell the teacher how they used it.

Try a guided routine

Keep the next step in your child’s hands.

Set a help level, review study conversations, and make room for your child to think before they see a solution.

Common questions

Useful checks before the next homework session.

What is the fastest way to check a response?
Pick one fact, one step of reasoning, and one sentence your child would need to explain. This quick check catches many problems without turning homework into a second assignment for the parent.
Can AI help with writing homework?
It can help children brainstorm, plan, or improve clarity. The final work should still reflect the child’s understanding and comply with the teacher’s expectations.
